Come spend a week with Hugh Fraser at this 5-day jazz workshop on beautiful Salt Spring Island. Brass, saxophones, guitar, piano, bass and drums are all welcome to join the band with Hugh and Monik. Hugh will bring his own original workshop material, and often focuses on African rhythms and body percussion which he relates to jazz and improvisation in creative and interesting ways. 

This will all culminate in the student recital on July 18th.  All ages are welcome; two years instrumental experience is recommended.

Workshop Fee:  $300

Hugh Fraser Native Victorian Hugh Fraser has been a positive force to the beautiful world of music for over two decades. He formed the 13 member Vancouver Ensemble of Jazz Improvisation (VEJI) in 1980, then went on to international success with The Hugh Fraser Quintet from 1986. The Quintet tours Europe, North and South America yearly. He was voted 2008’s Canadian Trombonist of the Year by the National Jazz Awards and also received this honour in 2005, 1996 and 1998.

Hugh has recorded over one hundred of his compositions on seventeen albums as a leader. He won two Juno Awards and many nominations for these recordings, and appears on over twenty albums as a sideman including recent releases by Cuban bands Chucho Valdés and Irakere on Bembe Records, Perspectiva on Egrem Records, and Kenny Wheeler on ECM Records.

As an educator, Hugh has served as the Program Head of Jazz at the Banff Centre for Fine Arts, Head of Jazz Composition at the Royal Academy of Music in London, England, Head of the University of Ulster Summer Jazz Workshop in Ireland, and is much sought after as a guest clinician by all major progressive institutions. Hugh received an honourary Doctorate from McMaster University.

He is personable and unassuming, a genuine and approachable person who is an inspiration to everyone he works with.  We are indeed lucky to have him join the Salt Spring Academy of the Arts this summer!

Monik_Nordine

Monik Nordine has been leading the Swing Shift Community Big Band for six years. She holds a Masters Degree in Music from McGill University, has been teaching privately since 1985 and has given clinics at numerous public and private secondary schools. In 2002 she recorded Blue Comedy with the Pat Coleman Quartet. not just to but over the moon, her album of original compositions, was recorded in 1997 and won critical acclaim in Jazz Improv Magazine and has been broadcast nationally. She also appears on the West Coast Music Award nominated album Cruel Yet Fair with The Hard Rubber Orchestra and This Blue with Smilin' Jack Smith. Her teaching activities are centered at Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo where she gives private saxophone tutorials
